Description of Bovine Cartilage Extracts

Bovine cartilage has been identified as one the materials that is broken down as a consequence of arthritic conditions and is one of the few tissues that does not contain blood vessels.

The main components of cartilage are collagen and chondroitin sulphate (CS). Both have similar physiological functions, which are to bind water and provide structural integrity.

CS belongs to a family of compounds called glycosaminoglycans (which are also known as mucopolysaccharides). Fish cartilage contains mainly chondroitin-6-sulphate (also referred to as CSC in shark cartilage) and a variety of sulphated chondroitins, whereas mammalian cartilage contains mainly chondroitin-4-sulphate (also referred to as CSA).

NZP produces two bovine cartilage extract powders which are standardised to contain concentrations of CS, measured at 15 % and 20%.
